What Is Hospitality Management?

Hospitality Management presents multiple career opportunities in one of the most diverse and exciting industries in the world. It involves the direct application of sound management principles, concepts and practices in the areas of food, lodging and other hospitality-related businesses. Generally, those in a Hospitality Management career are graduates of bachelor's degree programs, such as the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism.

Overview of Hospitality Management

Hospitality and tourism is comprised of many interrelated sectors, including lodging, food services, recreation, rental cars, contract services, gaming services, private clubs and meeting planning. The American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), www.ahla.com, states that the hospitality and tourism sector is the third largest retail industry in the United States, with an estimated $654 billion of annual revenue. Customer service is vital to the hospitality business because most customer contact in many hotels, casinos, cruise ships or private resorts occurs with entry-level workers. Therefore, strong management knowledge, skills and abilities are essential to ensuring that the appropriate systems are in place to supervise and monitor the job performance of the staff and their supervisors, which includes their interaction with customers. Many workers in the industry are traditionally at the low end of the wage scale. Hospitality Management employees usually work in:
